A History of TADROSS & ZAHLOUTE
Naumi Tadross founded the Oriental Rug Company
of Tadross & Zahloute in 1897, in New York City, importing
and distributing to merchants in America. Naumi also had his own
looms in Sultan Abad, Iran, and Tientsin, China, where rugs were
woven to his specifications. The principles in Michigan were Naumi's
nephews Naseem and Saliba Zahloute, brothers. Naumi was very interested
in health and owned three hotels with public mineral baths located
in Mt. Clemens, Michigan. The rug company was also located there
and deliveries were made by horse and buggy.
In the early 1900s they moved the company to
downtown Detroit at Grand Circus Park on Adams Avenue where it
thrived until after the Depression. In the 1930s a larger display
room was needed, and the company moved to Madison Avenue across
from the Detroit Athletic Club.
After attending school, Naseem Zahloute's son,
Robert, helped with the business. He joined the Army and spent
his time in the Radar Division. When he was discharged in 1957
he wanted to surprise his dad and without calling, went directly
to the store. The surprise was on him - the store was closed due
to an automobile accident that his father had been in. Naseem
asked Robert to fill in for a couple of weeks. That was over fifty
years ago and Robert is still running the business today.
The business moved from Detroit to Birmingham
in the late 1970's. Since 1995 Tadross & Zahloute provides
in-home services from Bloomfield Hills, and is available by phone,
fax, email, and personnel appointment.
Along the way, Mr. Zahloute has helped educate
many people about the benefits of owning Oriental rugs. He has
taught Adult Education classes for Wayne State University,
and seminars at various Rotary Clubs, the War Memorial in Grosse
Pointe, and The Village Club.
